Trump Calls TPP Trade Deal a ‘Rape’ of the United States

The proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership represents “a continuing rape of our country,” Donald Trump alleged Tuesday during a campaign speech in Ohio.

According to Politico, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee said the trade agreement would be “another disaster done and pushed by special interests who want to rape our country.” He added: “That’s what it is, too. It’s a harsh word; it’s a rape of our country.”

Trump pointed out that Hillary Clinton, the apparent Democratic nominee, was in favor of the TPP when she was secretary of state. She changed her position during this year’s presidential campaign, possibly because of pressure by rival candidate Bernie Sanders and his supporters.

The trade deal “is done by wealthy people that want to take advantage of us and that want to assign another partnership,” Trump said. “So Hillary Clinton, not so long ago, said this was the gold standard of trade pacts; the gold standard.”

Politico reported that the billionaire businessman was referring to Clinton’s comment in Australia in November 2012, during her tenure at the State Department, that “this TPP sets the gold standard in trade agreements to open free, transparent, fair trade; the kind of environment that has the rule of law and a level playing field.” Late last year, Clinton announced that she no longer backed the agreement because it “didn't meet my standards.”
