Super PAC Urges Paul Ryan To Run Against Trump

With establishment Republicans worrying about Donald Trump becoming their presidential nominee, one powerful party member is taking action to give voters an alternative.

The New York Times reported that Earle Mack, a wealthy businessman who was the U.S. ambassador to Finland during the administration of former President George W. Bush, has created a super PAC to encourage House Speaker Paul Ryan to join the GOP race. In an interview with the newspaper, Mack vowed to commit up to $1 million of his own fortune to finance The Committee to Draft Paul Ryan.

Mack insisted he is not motivated by personal distaste for Trump. “I’ve never had any fights with him,” he said. “Our parents were friendly. Fred Trump used my father’s contractors to build his house. … It all comes down to winning the election, not dividing our party, and I think that this presidential election has descended into more of a schoolyard scuffle.”

According to Newsmax, Ryan has not indicated that he wants to make a White House bid. “He is flattered, but not interested,” said AshLee Strong, a spokeswoman for the speaker, according to Fortune.

Many Republicans oppose Trump’s candidacy because they do not believe he is a true conservative. Others fear that he would lose the general election to the likely Democratic nominee, Hillary Clinton.
