Situation Turns Dangerous During The ‘Not My President Day’ Protest

Organizers of 'Not My President Day' protests across the U.S. last weekend begged attendees to protest peacefully. As expected, however, things got ugly. In Portland, Oregon, demonstrators clashed with police.

During the latest political march, 13 people in Portland were arrested when they failed to follow police instructions. The protesters, who did not have a permit, began pouring out into the streets and blocking traffic. When police in tactical gear warned some to get back and clear the road, they ignored the warning.

"Officers on bicycles and on foot attempted to maintain order but required assistance from Rapid Response Team officers," said a police statement.

Police have been accused by some of excessive force. Margaret Ann Zebroski, 66, ended up with a bloody nose when she was pushed to the ground and arrested, but otherwise no injuries were reported.

The police department reports that it used 'less-than-lethal munitions' to control the crowd.

Considering the scope of the protest, the incidents in Oregon were not the norm. In major cities across the U.S., including New York, Los Angeles and Chicago, local organizers staged their own home-town demonstrations. In Florida, President Trump himself passed by demonstrations as he headed from his Mar-a-Lago home back to the White House.

The seemingly endless protests over the last few weeks have largely begun to blur together, making it hard to pin-point the message of the organizers, but the 'Not My President Day' demonstration was a general rally to 'protest everything Donald Trump stands for.' Perhaps more accurately, they're there to protest everything they have convinced themselves he stands for.

"Donald Trump is literally our President, but figuratively, he has attacked every value New Yorkers embody and does not represent our interests," read the New York City call to action.

Hopefully people organizing protests will learn you can't fan the flames of hate and frustration so furiously and expect the fires to remain contained.
