Sanders: Candidate With The Most Votes Should Be President

Bernie Sanders argued in a recent interview that Donald Trump should be the last presidential candidate to come out on top in an election without winning the popular vote.

According to The Hill, the Vermont senator told USA Today: “We may want to take a look at the whole Electoral College, which is seating a man for president who didn’t get the most votes. This is something we need a serious discussion on.”

Trump is set to become the fourth president in U.S. history who failed to receive a majority of the votes. He was victorious because of wins in key states that offered large numbers of electoral votes. Last week’s election marked the second time in 16 years that the Democratic nominee lost despite getting the most individual votes. That was Al Gore’s fate in 2000, when he fell short in his race against George W. Bush.

“This campaign revolved around 15 states of the country, right?” Sanders asked. “Battleground states. My state of Vermont is a strong Democratic state. No one paid attention. Wyoming is a Republican state. Nobody paid attention to Wyoming. Is that a good way?” Regarding whether the Electoral College should be scrapped, the senator remarked: “I think you ought to think about this. ... I think we want to rethink that.”

The Hill noted that millions of Americans have added their names to a petition calling for electors to cast their ballots for Hillary Clinton, rather than Trump, when they vote on Dec. 19.
