Sanders Calls Trump’s Infrastructure Plan ‘Corporate Welfare’

Donald Trump’s promise to increase spending on the nation’s infrastructure is a scheme designed to line the pockets of large private companies, according to Bernie Sanders.

The Vermont senator pointed out that the president-elect’s proposal involves huge tax credits for corporate investors who finance bridge repairs, road improvements and other projects, Fortune reported.

“Trump would allow corporations that have stashed their profits overseas to pay just a fraction of what the companies owe in federal taxes,” Sanders wrote. “Then he would allow the companies to ‘invest’ in infrastructure projects in exchange for even more tax breaks. Trump’s plan is corporate welfare coming and going.”

The senator agreed that the country’s infrastructure is in dire need of reconstruction and repairs. He announced that he will once again introduce the Rebuild America Act, which calls for a trillion dollars in spending during a five-year period.

According to New York Sen. Chuck Schumer, who likely will succeed the retiring Nevada Sen. Harry Reid as the Senate minority leader, Democrats might be able to reach an agreement with the Republican presidential administration regarding infrastructure needs.

“Surprisingly, on certain issues, candidate Trump voiced very progressive and populist opinions,” Schumer pointed out during an interview on “Meet the Press” on NBC. “For instance, getting rid of the carried interest loophole, changing our trade laws dramatically, a large infrastructure bill.”
