San Francisco Refuses To Enforce Trump’s Ban On ‘Sanctuary’ Cities

In an act of disobedience against President Trump, municipal officials in San Francisco are refusing to accept an executive order prohibiting “sanctuary” cities.

Breitbart News reported that the California city’s mayor and police chief, as well as the county sheriff, wrote Monday in a letter to the Homeland Security Department: “San Francisco’s public-safety agencies will not enforce federal immigration law.” The letter explained that the city will not “participate in any agreements” outlined in the presidential action, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Mayor Ed Lee, Police Chief William Scott and Sheriff Vicki Hennessy acknowledged that the federal government can “empower state and local law-enforcement agencies across the country to perform the functions of an immigration officer in the interior of the United States to the maximum extent permitted by law.” However, the officials argued that their defiance “is in the interest of public safety” because enforcing the federal laws could cause friction between police officers and the public.

“Our community policing efforts are effective only if we have trust and cooperation of the communities we are charged to protect,” they wrote. “Pressing local jurisdictions to become entangled in federal immigration enforcement betrays that trust and undermines the work our public-safety departments have done to improve relations with our residents. We will not jeopardize the public safety of our communities to do the job of the federal government. Our law-abiding residents are safer when they can report crimes, get immunizations and enroll their children in public school. If cities acquiesce to your demands to carry out immigration enforcement, we lose the trust of our communities.”

San Francisco has been a sanctuary city since 1989, according to Breitbart News. The alt-right website reported that on Tuesday, San Francisco authorities announced plans to file a lawsuit against the Trump administration in an attempt to derail the executive order.

A federal judge issued an injunction on Saturday to block implementation of another Trump order, which would ban war refugees as well as immigrants from certain “terror-prone” countries.
