Ryan Refuses to Rescind His Endorsement of Trump

House Speaker Paul Ryan insisted on Thursday that he does not plan to join Mitt Romney and other Republican leaders in rejecting Donald Trump’s presidential bid.

CNN reported that the Wisconsin congressman said it is “not my plan” to retract his endorsement of the New York City real-estate developer, who has won enough delegates to next month’s Republican National Convention to secure the nomination.

“We’re going to agree to disagree on some things,” Ryan explained during his weekly news conference at the Capitol. “That’s just the way things work. Mitt Romney and I didn’t agree on everything. What we do agree on is we don’t want another Democrat in the White House, I can tell you that.”

However, the speaker vowed to oppose Trump on certain issues, like the billionaire’s proposal to temporarily ban all Muslims from entering the United States. When asked how often he expects to openly disagree with his party’s nominee, Ryan replied: “I don’t know the answer to that question, either. He's a different kind of candidate; this is a different kind of year.”

A reporter pointed out that on Wednesday, Trump told his Republican critics to “just be quiet.” Ryan responded: “You can’t make this up sometimes. We represent a separate but equal branch of government.”

The speaker is scheduled to chair the GOP convention in Cleveland, where Trump will become the nominee unless the party changes its rules.
