Rubio: Don’t Call Me an ‘Establishment’ Politician

Marco Rubio does not want to be seen as an “establishment” presidential candidate, according to Newsmax.

“I reject all these labels,” the Florida senator said Wednesday on Fox News. “Those are the things the media comes with.”

Political commentators often list Rubio as one of the mainstream contenders for the Republican nomination, along with others who have held public office. They include former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, Ohio Gov. John Kasich and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie. Candidates like Donald Trump, Ted Cruz and Ben Carson are considered outsiders because of their anti-establishment views.

Rubio told Fox host Sean Hannity that GOP leaders opposed his decision to run against incumbent Florida Gov. Charlie Crist six years ago. He said the party officials advised him to wait his turn. This year, he has found himself embroiled in a battle with Bush, another veteran Republican politician.

Referring to Bush’s massive fundraising efforts, Rubio said: “I’m not complaining, but pointing out the fact that money did not come from the grassroots. Those are big multimillion dollar checks written by people in the establishment.”

The senator has been rising in national and state polls of likely GOP primary voters. He surprised some pundits by placing a strong third in the Iowa caucuses on Feb. 1.
