Old Obama Love Letters Made Public - And They’re Not To Who You Think

When we’re young and in love, we all say and do things that may seem strange with the benefit of hindsight. For the overwhelming majority of us, we are fortunate enough to be able to engage in that reflection without the rest of the world doing it alongside of us. Former President Barack Obama is not as fortunate, as some old love letters from his younger days have been made public. As the Daily Mail shares, the object of his affection is not who you think.

During his time in college, Obama had a girlfriend by the name of Alexandra McNear. While he was tending to his studies at Columbia University, he penned her some letters. Those same letters have now been unveiled for public consumption by Emory University, which has plans to place the letters in its archives. The letters run the gamut from the future president expressing his admiration for his sweetie to random deep thoughts.

“I trust you know that I miss you, that my concern for you is as wide as the air, my confidence in you as deep as the sea, my love rich and plentiful,” reads one passage.

“I think of you often, though I stay confused about my feelings,” he writes in another letter. “It seems we will ever want what we cannot have; that's what binds us; that's what keeps us apart.”

Beyond the mushy stuff, Obama demonstrated that he was quite the deep thinker in his younger days.

“Thinking in purely scientific terms, and dealing with scales far removed from the human world, gives me a release and creative escape from the frustrations of studying men and their frequently dingy institutions,” he wrote. “Of course, the fact that the knowledge I absorb in the class facilitates nuclear war prevents a clean break.”

That’s an interesting take on things, but he would also head down some darker roads in his writing. It seems like he was struggling with his choices of which path to choose, which is a pretty common dilemma for those that are engrossed in their studies prior to entering the real world.

“I must admit large dollops of envy for both groups, my American friends consuming their life in the comfortable mainstream, the foreign friends in the international business world. Caught without a class, a structure, or a tradition to support me, in a sense the choice to take a different path is made for me,” Obama wrote. “The only way to assuage my feelings of isolation are to absorb all the traditions, classes, make them mine, me theirs. Taken separately, they're unacceptable and untenable.”

Obama and McNear wound up breaking up in the mid-1980’s. McNear would go on to marry a Serbian boxer, and she started a career in green energy. The future president would enjoy the company of a woman by the name of Genevieve Cook before moving on to a relationship with his future wife, former First Lady Michelle Obama.
