Obama Attacks Trump’s Isolationist Foreign Policy

President Obama is taking the gloves off in his criticisms of presumptive Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.

Making the commencement speech to graduates of the U.S. Air Force Academy Thursday afternoon, Obama made a point to criticize isolationism as a “false comfort” that will only lead to more terror attacks and hurt the United States's reputation in many foreign countries.

“America cannot shirk the mantle of leadership,” President Obama noted. “We can’t be isolationists. It’s not possible in this globalized, interconnected world.”

While the president acknowledged “it’s tempting to pull back” and “wash our hands of conflicts that seem intractable,” he continued to say attacks like Pearl Harbor and 9/11 make it clear “oceans alone cannot protect us.”

Obama Going after Trump

Obama’s commencement address in Colorado Springs, Colo., was the second day in a row he has laid into Trump and his campaign promises.

The Donald has blithely poo-pooed NATO, and went so far as to argue that long-term allies such as Japan and South Korea should pay for the expenses of U.S. troops in their countries.

Obama also derided Trump’s murderous desire to “take out” the families of ISIS in Iraq as well as those of Syrian jihadist militants.

He explained that the U.S. has to take the moral high ground. “When we use force, we have a responsibility to use it proportionally, unlike terrorists, who try to kill as many people as possible.”

The president went on to point out that the U.S. military goes to “extraordinary lengths” to minimize civilian casualties.
