McCain Calls Barring Non-Christian Refugees ‘Bizarre’

According to Sen. John McCain, some of his fellow Republican are wrong “to discriminate against children because they are not Christian.”

He was referring to GOP presidential candidates Jeb Bush and Ted Cruz arguing that only Christian refugees from Syria should be allowed into the United States. McCain, who chairs the Senate Armed Services Committee, told the news site Mashable that the proposal is “bizarre.”

However, the Arizona lawmaker agreed with his colleagues that the Obama administration should “pause” its plan to accept 10,000 Syrians next year. “We should suspend it until we are sure that nobody’s going to get into the United States that can do damage to us,” he explained. “I’m not saying never take them. I don’t want little children’s bodies to wash up on the beach.”

McCain continued: “By the way, this thing about the Christians only … I view myself as a fairly religious person. One of the tenets of my faith is that we’re all God’s children.”

Mashable noted that Republican White House hopeful Chris Christie told radio talk-show Hugh Hewitt that if he was president even young Syrian orphans would be barred entry to the United States.

Obama said the views of those opposing his resettlement plan are “shameful” and “not American.” He stressed that “it’s not who we are; we don’t have religious tests to our compassion.”
