Immigrants Get Citizenship Despite Fraud, Possible Threats

At least 858 immigrants who either committed fraud or were facing deportation have been allowed to become U.S. citizens, a federal official revealed Monday.

According to The Associated Press, Homeland Security Department Inspector General John Roth said a recent audit found that the foreigners were wrongly granted citizenship. He told reporters that many of the immigrants gave false names and birthdates to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

Roth said all of the immigrants were formerly citizens of “special-interest countries” (those that pose possible threats to the United States) or from adjacent nations where immigration fraud is common. The audit determined that more than 950 other naturalized citizens had outstanding deportation orders.

ICE officials were unable to properly identify the citizenship applicants because many immigrants’ fingerprints have not been recorded in the federal government’s digital database. The fingerprints are only on old paper records, which cannot be electronically searched. In a written statement, DHS claimed immigration officials have begun transferring the information to computers. The department vowed to check “every file” involving immigrants accused of fraud.

The audit determined that officials cannot access the fingerprints of about 315,000 immigrants who are either fugitive criminals or facing final deportation orders. More than 148,000 of the foreigners still have not had their fingerprints electronically uploaded.
