Graham Goes After Trump Over Immigration

Sen. Lindsey Graham on Thursday bashed fellow presidential candidate Donald Trump for alleging that Mexico is deliberately sending murderers, rapists and drug dealers to the United States.

“It’s just out of sheer ignorance, the comments he made,” the South Carolina Republican said on CNN. "The 11 million-plus illegal immigrants come here mostly for work. They come from poorer and poorer countries. The overwhelming, vast majority are good, decent, hard-working people."

Graham acknowledged that “among the 11 million, there are some very bad people," but stressed that it is "absolutely wrong" to suggest they are the majority. He said Trump “expresses frustration, (but) frustration doesn’t cut it,” The Hill reported.

The senator called out his own party, as well as the Obama administration, for not taking illegal immigration seriously enough. He touted his record on the issue, having sponsored immigration-reform legislation two years ago that the Senate passed but the House rejected.

The Hill noted that Trump is on the defensive for his remarks, which he originally made during his June 16 campaign announcement speech. Since then, he has refused to retract or soften the comments. As a result, a number of businesses have cut ties with him. Among them are NBC, Univision, Macy’s, Serta and PGA of America.
