GOP Lawmaker Accuses FBI Of Giving Clinton Special Treatment

The FBI has an “extreme pro-Hillary Clinton bias,” a Republican congressman declared on Fox News last week.

Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida made the remark following a private hearing by the House Judiciary Committee on Thursday. The lawmakers questioned FBI Director Andrew McCabe about the bureau’s probe of the private email server that Clinton used as secretary of state.

Gaetz noted that the committee “is engaged in an investigation, particularly as it relates to the handling of the Hillary Clinton email scandal and any potential investigations of the Clinton Foundation and the handling of bribes or other types of improper payments.” The congressman alleged that the FBI gave Clinton a “headquarters special” when agents determined there was insufficient evidence to prosecute her. He suggested that the bureau was trying to help Clinton win the 2016 election.

“I think we have to ensure that never happens again; that the same processes that would apply to any American would also apply to people who were running for president of the United States,” Gaetz said. He demanded that the committee establish policies providing additional “oversight” and “transparency” at the FBI and the Justice Department, according to Fox News.

“We just want to follow the facts,” Gaetz explained. “We want to see if we’ve got the right systems and processes in place for reporting and transparency, so that the American people have confidence in the FBI and confidence in the Department of Justice.”

CNN cited “multiple sources” in reporting that the committee also questioned McCabe about his involvement in the FBI’s probe of allegations that the Trump campaign colluded with Russia to interfere in the election. McCabe revealed that former FBI chief James Comey told him about his meetings with the president, which might mean that McCabe could confirm Comey’s accounts of the conversations.

In his own congressional testimony, Comey said Trump asked him to end the bureau’s investigation of former national security adviser Michael Flynn, who is facing federal charges of lying to FBI agents about his contacts with Russia’s ambassador to the United States in December 2016. The president denies that he made the request. However, he admitted that he fired Comey in May in an effort to thwart the FBI inquiry into alleged collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia during last year’s White House race.

McCabe’s closed-door testimony lasted for 16 hours. Members of the House intelligence and oversight committees joined the judiciary panel at the hearing. Many Republicans are calling for McCabe’s ouster because of his role in the Clinton and Trump investigations.

They have expressed outrage that the FBI considered as legitimate evidence the contents of a dossier that a former British spy compiled. The dossier reportedly features information about Trump’s Russian connections.

Democrats pushed back at their GOP colleagues for grilling McCabe about the Clinton probe. “All this time on Clinton emails and dragging the FBI in to talk about Clinton instead of the real crime: Russian interference in our democracy,” said Democratic Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi of Illinois, a member of the House Oversight Committee.
