Frustrated With Roadblocks, Trump Bashes ‘Archaic’ System Of Constitutional Government

President Trump, frustrated with Congress and federal judges, is criticizing the Constitution’s system of checks and balances among the three branches of government.

“It’s a very rough system,” Trump told Fox News. “It’s an archaic system. … It’s really a bad thing for the country.” According to the Independent, the president was expressing frustration about the courts having rejected his executive orders to ban immigration from certain Muslim countries, and his inability to repeal Obamacare or score any other legislative victories on Capitol Hill. Trump said he is “disappointed” that the Senate’s Republican majority is not passing his proposals, even though he claimed to have “great relationships” with a number of the lawmakers.

The administration also is under pressure for its links with Russia. Two congressional committees, as well as the FBI, are investigating how Russian leader Vladimir Putin interfered with the 2016 election, and whether the Trump campaign colluded with him. Many Trump associates, including some of his top aides, have Russian connections. His former campaign chairman and national security adviser were forced to resign because of their ties to the longtime U.S. adversary.

In recent polls, only about 40 percent of voters gave Trump a favorable approval rating. No other president has had such a low score after just 100 days in office since such polling began in the 1940s. President Obama enjoyed a 65 percent rating at that point in his first term.

In a guest editorial for The Washington Post, Trump argued that the beginning of his presidency has been successful. “One hundred days ago, I took the oath of office and made a pledge: We are not merely going to transfer political power from one party to another, but instead are going to transfer that power from Washington, D.C., and give it back to the people,” he wrote. “Issue by issue, department by department, we are giving the people their country back. After decades of a shrinking middle class, open borders and the mass offshoring of American jobs and wealth, this government is working for the citizens of our country and no one else.”
