Former President George H.W. Bush Reaches Major Milestone

To say that it has been an eventful life for former President George H.W. Bush would be an understatement. The 41st President of the United States has had a remarkable run in the public eye, and he’s still going strong at the age of 93. In fact, he just achieved another rather fascinating milestone that nearly flew under the radar. As the Huffington Post shares, Bush has now lived longer than any US President.

At the ripe old age of 93 years and 166 days, Bush surpassed former President Gerald R. Ford’s previous mark of 93 years and 165 days. Teen political blogger Gabe Fleisher shared a post on social media to commemorate the milestone.

“Milestone today: At 93 years and 166 days, @GeorgeHWBushbecomes the longest-lived President in U.S. history, surpassing Gerald Ford,” he wrote.

Bush was born on June 12, 1924 in Massachusetts to his parents, to Prescott Sheldon Bush and Dorothy (Walker) Bush. He would go on to serve in the US Navy during World War II, and he would marry Barbara Pierce shortly after being honorably discharged in 1945. Bush would enter Yale University soon thereafter, and he would move his young family to West Texas upon graduation. He entered the oil business and earned a substantial sum of money, but it wasn’t too long before political ambitions got the better of him.

Bush would start out as Chairman of the Republican Party for Harris County, Texas in 1964, and he would go on to mount a successful bid for Congress. He started out in the House but eventually set his sights on the Senate. After losing that election in 1970, he shied away from elected office, but he remained quite visible. Among the titles that he held during the 1970s were Ambassador to the United Nations, Envoy to China, and Chairman of the Republican National Committee. He would also serve as Director of the CIA for about a year during the Ford administration.

In 1980, Bush set his sights on the White House for the first time, but he was thwarted in his bid by Ronald Reagan, who secured the Republican nomination. Bush would agree to be his running mate, and he served as Vice President through both of Reagan’s terms in office. He would mount another bid for the Oval Office in 1988, and this time he was successful as he defeated Democratic challenger Michael Dukakis. Bush served one term before being defeated by former President Bill Clinton.

Since that time, Bush has seen his son, George W. Bush, have two terms in the White House as well. His health has been on the decline for some time now, and he uses either a wheelchair or motorized scooter to help him get around better. He had a major health scare earlier this year when he was diagnosed with pneumonia, but he was able to pull through after a stay in the hospital and go on to toss the coin prior to this year’s Super Bowl.

Other recent presidents take the third and fourth spots on the list of longest-lived presidents, with Reagan in third at 93 years and 120 days, and former President Jimmy Carter currently in fourth but still climbing the list.
