Former New York Governor Joins GOP Presidential Field

Touting his experience as a three-term governor of New York, George Pataki announced Thursday that he is running for the Republican presidential nomination.

The 2016 race will be Pataki’s first White House bid, though he nearly threw his hat into the ring in 2008 and 2012, Bloomberg News reported. He has not held public office since serving as governor from 1996 to 2006.

"It is time to stand up, protect our freedom and take back this government," Pataki said in an announcement video on his “Pataki for President” website. “America should have leaders with records of accomplishment, who are focused on the issues that matter and who have won tough elections despite challenging demographics.”

Bloomberg News noted that many Americans first became aware of Pataki during the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks in New York City, but the former governor’s national profile has faded since then. Recently, he has tried to recapture media attention by speaking at campaign events like the Republicans’ South Carolina Freedom Summit.

Unlike some of the GOP presidential candidates, who are reaching out to the party’s conservative voters, Pataki is considered a moderate. However, Bloomberg News pointed out that he supports letting states decide social issues like abortion and gay marriage.
