Eric Trump: Don’t Expect To See Candidate’s Tax Returns

Donald Trump would be “foolish” if he gave into pressure by releasing his past income-tax returns, according to one of the Republican presidential nominee’s sons.

“There is no tax attorney in the world who will tell you to release your tax returns while you’re under a standard, routine audit,” Eric Trump said during a CNBC interview. “It would never happen. Anybody who thinks that is in La-La Land. … It would be foolish to do.” According to IRS officials and other experts, an audit does not prevent the disclosure.

Politico noted that for decades, all major-party nominees have released their tax returns. Both members of this year’s Democratic Party ticket, Hillary Clinton and Tim Kaine, have already done so. Trump’s vice-presidential running mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, has promised to provide his records soon.

“His tax return, did you see the Twitter picture, it’s 5 feet tall,” Eric Trump said. “You would have a bunch of people who know nothing about taxes trying to look through and trying to come up with assumptions they know nothing about. … You learn a lot more when you look at somebody’s assets. You know how many hotels we have around the world. You know how many golf courses we have around the world. You know every single building we have.”

Politico noted that the real-estate tycoon’s critics, including the Clinton campaign, have been amping up their calls for him to release his returns. They suggest he is keeping the files secret to prevent voters from finding out he has had business deals with Russia.
