Elijah Cummings, Like Many Others, Feels Uneasy About White House's Response To Russia Probe

Things are heating up in Washington as investigations into the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia turns up new evidence. One member of Congress has advice for the Trump administration after a closed-door briefing given to lawmakers last week: "they might want to start looking for a lawyer."

Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) appeared on CNN's 'News Day' on Wednesday morning to express his concerns about President Donald Trump's ties to Russia. According to Cummings, 'there is a lot of deception' going on.

“Keep in mind, the president told us initially that no, none of his people had had contact with the Russians,” Cummings said. “That's what he told us. And then we found everybody had contact. And so there's a lot here.”

Days before the interview, Cummings sent a letter to the House Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) to say that former national security adviser Michael Flynn “lied to investigators who interviewed him in 2016 as a part of his security clearance renewal.”

The committee discovered that a Russian-state media outlet paid for Flynn's trip to Russia in 2015. Flynn had told investigators that 'U.S. companies' funded the trip for him. According to Cummings, 'radio silence' was the Republican response to the allegation.

The Trump administration's ties to Russia just keep coming. Suspicions were aroused even further when the president himself requested that the investigation into Flynn be dropped and after more recent accusations of the president revealing sensitive intelligence information to Russian dignitaries in the Oval Office.

“If I were advising people in this case, I would tell almost anybody who had a lot to do with the transition, they might want to start looking for a lawyer,” said Cummings.

Cummings reiterated his concerns on ABC's 'This Week' with George Stephanopoulos. “My impression, when I walked out of the briefing, was that this thing runs deep, “There may be quite a few people that may have some problems with the law.”

According to the New York Times, Democratic lawmakers are calling for Trump's impeachment as the investigation into Trump's collusion with Russia has been ramped up. Cummings warns people to not lose sight of the bigger picture.

“Impeachment is one, but we’ve got to concentrate on the fact that the Russians interfered with our elections,” Cummings said. “I keep telling people, don’t get so caught up in impeachment that you forget about that.”
