Dunkin' Brand CEO Makes Argument Against Raising Minimum Wage

While the nation, and the world, is mired on the topic of providing living wages, Dunkin' Brand CEO Nigel Travis said that New York state's wage board plan to have fast food workers make at least $15 per hour by 2018 would do more harm than good. On the other hand, Travis shared that he does support governments making "reasonable increases" to the minimum wage, but a hike to $15 per hour represents a 71% increase over the current state minimum. In an interview with CNN's Poppy Harlow, Travis said "It's going to affect small businesses and franchises."

He also stated that it would prevent his company from hiring new people--something that would produce a negative effect on Americans who need a job. He added "I don't want to sound threatening about that." He also said that it probably wouldn't force Dunkin' to lay off workers--although wage increases are often passed off onto consumers in the form of higher prices. Travis argued that fast food companies are a starting point in the job market, and he said most of the Dunkin' employees on minimum wage are teenagers that are expected to move on to higher-paying jobs.

He even stated that he does support a "living wage," or the concept that pay should be tied to an employee's cost of living. In addition, Travis thinks $12 per hour sounds more reasonable, which would be the living wage for a worker with family at home. Travis logically stated that first "A debate needs to take place about how to tackle income inequality."
