Donald Trump's State Of The Union Address Plagiarizes Hillary Clinton, Some Argue

Last night, President Donald Trump gave the State of the Union address. The media has been combing over the president's speech line by line and found that at least one of those lines appears to have come from Trump's 2016 campaign opponent, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Some wonder whether the inclusion of Clinton's phrase was a dig at her and the Democratic party, or an attempt to extend an olive branch.

In his first State of the Union, Trump was clearly trying to be optimistic. After an extremely difficult and controversial year in office, he looked to the future with hope.

“This is our New American Moment,” Trump said.  “There has never been a better time to start living the American dream.”

The press knew the line was coming as it had appeared in an early transcript released by the White House. Many pointed out that the phrasing was very familiar.

Clinton frequently referred to a 'new American moment' in speeches she gave between 2009 and 2010. It's hard to imagine that any Washington speech writer, or that anyone prepping the president for the address, would not have been aware that Clinton frequently used the phrase.

Some speculate that Trump was taking a pot-shot at Clinton, who has been very critical of him since his unexpected 2016 win. Clinton even appeared on the Grammy Awards last week mocking Trump with a reading of the unflattering biography, “Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House.”

Some speculate that Trump might have been looking to mend fences with the Democratic party. From the tax cuts to the recent government shutdown showdown, Democrats have remained on course with their vows to 'resist' Trump.
The POTUS has promised to make an effort to improve his relationship with the opposing party, but Democrats claim they have not felt that there has been any real spirit of cooperation.

“He’s always been good at slapping his name on someone else’s work and calling it a big, beautiful success (did I just spoil the economic section of the speech),” said Cody Keenan, a former Obama speech writer and Trump critic.

Many Trump resisters have been complaining that the POTUS has been taking credit for economic recovery, which they say was actually due to the policies put in place by his predecessor, President Barack Obama.

Others shot back that the three words are not exactly a well-known trademark line. Crediting Clinton for using it in a couple of speeches a decade ago for a couple of words, as if it was some novel new thought, is a little overly-generous.

“It really doesn't require plagiarism to come up with a line as bland and benign as "new American moment,” wrote McKay Coppins of 'The Atlantic'.

It’s not the first time a member of the Trump family was slammed for plagiarizing a member of the Obama family. First Lady Melania Trump, in her first speech, expressed sentiments that were uttered by former First Lady Michelle Obama in her first speech, almost word for word.

Melania’s spokesperson said the FLOTUS had sent a speech writer parts of Mrs. Obama’s speech with ideas she liked and wanted to use. Somewhere along the line, wires got crossed, and the speech writer wrote those parts into Melania’s speech. It was an embarrassing mistake.
