Democrat Staffer Called Fallen SEAL's Wife 'Crying Clapping Idiot', Big Mistake

The problem with social media like Twitter is that sometimes you can say something in the heat of the moment, and put it out there for all the world to see. Before you get the chance to think twice about the comment, the deed is done, and you're going to have to face the consequences of your rash action. One tweet has ruined many lives, and one man just added himself to the list.

Dan Grilo, a huge Hillary Clinton volunteer who also supported former President Barack Obama, was watching President Donald Trump's first address to joint session of Congress on Tuesday night and tweeted about it. The next day, he had to shut down his Twitter account because of the uproar over his tweet, and he was promptly fired from his job.

Grilo picked on the wrong person: Carryn Owens, widow of U.S. Navy SEAL William “Ryan” Owens. The SEAL was killed last month in a raid in Yemen that was meant to collect sensitive intelligence information.

There has been much argument over whether the mission was successful or not. Some, such as Senator John McCain, felt the mission was a failure due to Owens' death. Others, such as U.S. Secretary of Defense General James 'Mad Dog' Mattis, felt it was a successful mission because it accomplished its aim. Casualties are a tragic loss, but have never before been used to measure the success of a mission.

“Ryan died as he lived: a warrior, and a hero – battling against terrorism and securing our nation,” said President Trump, introducing Mrs. Owens. The woman who lost her husband just a month earlier looked up and tried to hold back the tears as much of Congress applauded for an extended period in a standing ovation.

“Sorry, Owens' wife, you’re not helping yourself or your husband’s memory by standing there and clapping like an idiot. Trump just used you,” Grilo tweeted, and it quickly went viral.

People from both sides of the political aisle felt that calling the grieving widow of a war hero an 'idiot' was crossing the line, no matter what your position on the president or the mission. Grilo deleted the tweet and apologized, but it was all too late. The original tweet had been archived and continued to be spread around.

The next morning, Grilo was fired from his job at the Chicago-based Liberty Advisor Group. The company confirmed they let go of an employee after 'an offensive and inappropriate tweet' that they felt were 'inconsistent with the Company's values'.

Grilo's social media accounts, as well as his LinkedIn account, were deleted.
