Congresswoman Receives Blood-Chilling Email, Threat In Wake Of Baseball Practice Shooting

An upstate New York Congresswoman was left shocked and shaking after she received an email titled “One down, 216 to go,” just hours after the shooting of her colleagues at a practice baseball game preceding a charity event.

When Claudia Tenney, a freshman representative from the Utica area, became a congresswoman, she never imaged her life would be put on the line. However, just hours after her fellow House Republican, Steve Scalise, was shot at a baseball game in Alexandria, Virginia, Tenney received an email telling her that she would be next. The shocking email, titled “One down, 216 to go”, read as follows:

“Did you NOT expect this? When you take away ordinary peoples very lives in order to pay off the wealthiest among us, your own lives are forfeit. Certainly, your souls and morality were lost long before. Good riddance.”

With Congressman Scalise, originally from Louisiana, in a critical condition, and five other individuals injured, the FBI have launched an investigation into the background of the alleged shooter, James Hodgkinson, trawling through his social media accounts and scrutinizing his social circles. It is hoped that the preliminary investigation will be able to determine a concrete motive for the shooting. Mr. Hodgkinson, a 66-year-old man from Belleville, Illinois, was believed to be an avid anti-Trump supporter and often sparked heated and controversial political opinions on his social media accounts, advocating his support for former Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders. Mr. Hodgkinson died soon after he attacked Congressman Scalise, following a face-to-face shootout with authorities.

Staff at the MedStar Washington Hospital Center stated that “Congressman Steve Scalise sustained a single rifle shot to the left hip. The bullet travelled across his pelvis, fracturing bones, injuring internal organs and causing severe bleeding… He underwent immediate surgery, and an additional procedure to stop the bleeding.” Mr. Scalise remains in a critical condition, receiving multiple blood transfusions and is being prepped to undergo additional surgeries in order to save his life.

Matt Mika, a lobbyist for Tyson Food and a former colleague of Congressman Scalise, was also shot by Mr. Hodgkinson and remains in a critical condition after undergoing one surgery. President Trump made an impromptu visit to the MedStar Washington Hospital Center, offering the families of Scalise and other victims words of comfort and prayers. President Trump later made an address from the White House, stating, “America is praying for [Scalise] and America is praying for all the victims of this terrible shooting.”

Ms. Tenney has released a statement revealing that the threatening message was not the first message she has received, but disclosed that receiving such an email so soon after the horrific shooting was “particularly disturbing and disheartening.” The email was immediately reported to Capitol Police and the anonymous source traced. Capitol Hill Police have also notified congressional offices that security would be increased on the Hill “out of an abundance of caution.” The horrific incident has rekindled the age-old and deeply polarizing political and social debate around gun regulation.
