Congressman Calls For Trump Impeachment - No Such Thing As A Good Nazi

With the nationwide outrage caused by Donald Trump's recent sympathetic statements regarding white nationalists, it was only a matter of time before someone in government decided to do something about it.

A Democratic congressman is vowing to sponsor articles of impeachment against Donald Trump in response to the president’s controversial remarks about last week’s violence at a rally in Charlottesville, Va.

Trump has “failed the presidential test of moral leadership,” Rep. Steve Cohen of Tennessee declared Thursday, according to The Huffington Post. “Instead of unequivocally condemning hateful actions by neo-Nazis, white nationalists and Klansmen following a national tragedy, the president said ‘there were very fine people on both sides,’” the lawmaker noted in a written statement. “There are no good Nazis. There are no good Klansmen. … None of the marchers spewing such verbiage could be considered ‘very fine people’ as the president suggested.”

He continued: “No moral president would ever shy away from outright condemning hate, intolerance and bigotry. … Neo-Nazis and the KKK are domestic terrorists. If the president can’t recognize the difference between these domestic terrorists and the people who oppose their anti-American attitudes, then he cannot defend us. … As a Jew and as an American and as a representative of an African-American district, I am revolted by the fact that the president of the United States couldn’t stand up and unequivocally condemn Nazis who want to kill Jews and whose predecessors murdered 6 million Jews during the Holocaust, and could not unequivocally condemn Klansmen whose organization is dedicated to terrorizing African-Americans.”

A woman was killed and 19 people suffered injuries when reputed neo-Nazi James Fields allegedly steered his car into a crowd of anti-racism counter-protesters. Two Virginia State Patrol officers assigned to the event died when their helicopter crashed, and dozens sustained injuries in street fighting.

Immediately following the incident, Trump claimed “many sides” were responsible for the bloodshed. On Monday, he condemned bigotry, but the following day expressed sympathy for part of the conservative crowd. The president’s critics and supporters alike accused him of sending a signal to the so-called “alt-right” that he is on their side. Trump drew more outrage from the left when he came out against removing Confederate statues and flags from public sites in the South.

HuffPost pointed out that Cohen, the top-ranking Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, is not the only lawmaker demanding impeachment. Others include Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, California Rep. Maxine Waters and Minnesota Rep. Keith Ellison. Two months ago, following congressional testimony by fired FBI Director James Comey, Rep. Brad Sherman of California filed one article of impeachment.

“I believe that Trump’s use of threats to obstruct the ongoing criminal investigations of Michael Flynn clearly violate (the Constitution),” Sherman said, referring to the former national security adviser who was forced to resign in February due to his Russian connections. “Trump’s efforts to obstruct the investigation of his campaign’s possible collusion with Russia violated the same statute.”

According to The Hill, Rep. Al Green of Texas endorsed his colleague’s article of impeachment. Reps. Gwen Moore of Wisconsin and Jackie Spier of California also are demanding Trump’s removal from office. Trump denies that he is aligned with white supremacists, though many of them are among his supporters. Former KKK imperial wizard David Duke praised the president’s comments about the rally.
