Carson: We Can't Accept Refugees

President Obama’s plan to allow 10,000 more Syrian refugees into the country would “expose us to danger” while failing to “solve the problem,” according to Ben Carson.

The Republican presidential candidate told TODAY’s Matt Lauer on Tuesday that the refugees should be provided places to live in the Middle East rather than the United States.

Last week, Carson traveled to Jordan to see camps for some of the millions of Syrians fleeing their war-ravaged homeland. Political pundits suggested that the trip was designed to make the candidate look more knowledgeable about foreign policy. He has been widely ridiculed for his lack of diplomatic and political experience.

Carson described the camps as “really quite nice,” and praised Jordan’s “very generous people” for providing temporary homes as well as hospitals to the refugees. The humanitarian efforts “work very well,” but more funding is needed, according to the retired neurosurgeon.

“Why don’t we take advantage of things that are already in place before we start trying to come up with other things?” he asked Lauer, explaining that most refugees would rather live in the camps than move to the West.

“What can nations like the United States do? They can support the efforts of places like Jordan and other places that might offer them a safe place to inhabit until such time as they can return home,” Carson said.
