Here’s One Way Karen Pence Is Making Herself At Home In VP Residence

When you move into new digs, it’s pretty common to feel the need to put your own spin on things. A fresh coat of paint here, some distinguishing personal touches there, and before you know it, your new home really feels like yours.

There’s also some unique things you can do as well, and some of them can turn out to be real conversation pieces. That’s what Karen Pence has done to help her transition to life in the nation’s capital, and we would assume this is one of the more unique features that the vice president’s residence at the US Naval Observatory has ever seen.

As the Palm Beach Post shares, Mrs. Mike Pence has opened up her home to share that unique feature, which is a real live beehive. Yes, you read that correctly. News of the hive has been shared on social media, and the second lady has gone ahead and confirmed it herself.

.@SecondLady Karen Pence, joined by @SecretarySonny and beekeeper Larry, show off the new Naval Observatory beehive,” shared one user.

“What a bee-utiful day at the VP Residence!!! Thanks to @SecretarySonny for helping to unveil the beehive and explain why bees are important,” shared Karen Pence.

So what’s the fascination with bees? Well, it appears that the second lady is a really big fan. She’s a strong advocate for the role that bees play, and it sounds like she wants to spread the knowledge on that as much as possible.

“Bees play a critical role in our state’s agriculture by pollinating plants that make up roughly a third of our diet,” she noted back in 2014. “The bees will provide an added bonus to the vegetable and flower gardens at the Governor’s Residence by making them well-pollinated and taste even better at harvest.”

This isn’t just some tiny hive either. It features a staggering 20,000 bees and a queen bee that goes by the name of Alexandra. We’ll assume that Pence is well-versed on safety precautions to have so many bees on her property - but still, wow.

Let’s play devil’s advocate for a second and assume Alexandra gets collicky one day. She takes it out on her legions of followers, and those bees head out to work for the day pretty ticked off. Maybe it’s just me, but I wouldn’t want to be around thousands of angry bees.

We’ll assume Alexandra does a good job of keeping her emotions in check and view this through the lens of Pence. Bees do some outstanding work out there that they rarely get credit for, and perhaps she’ll be able to help raise awareness by being such a strong advocate.

Who knows, someday this trend may catch on. Backyards everywhere will feature their own beehives, and they will suddenly become a must-have accessory for prospective home buyers.

In any event, this is an awesome way for the Pences to make themselves feel right at home, and it can serve as an educational tool to boot as she helps raise awareness.
