Two Men Attack Former Army Ranger To Get At His Service Dog

Returning veterans that have dealt with some particularly traumatic experiences can need a helping hand to navigate the course of dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder. While love and understanding from family members go a long way towards helping them out, sometimes a little extra is needed. That’s where support dogs come in, and these specially trained animals are nothing short of amazing.

As the Independent Journal Review shares, former Army Ranger Robert Lebron had a special relationship with his beloved pet Mala. When Lebron returned from a tour of duty in Afghanistan, he knew that he needed some help. Enter Mala, and the pair became fast friends.

“It was one of the most amazing things that has happened to me in a long time. Because I can take her everywhere to the store, to church, to the hospital - and I do,” he explains.

Lebron is now desperately hoping for a reunion with his beloved dog after a shocking incident separated them. On Mother’s Day, Lebron was walking back from a park near his home in the Bronx when he was jumped from behind by two assailants. While he was distracted in the ensuing scuffle, one of the assailants grabbed his pup by the leash and took off.

“What she gives me I can't get from someone else: not a therapist or a family member or my friend. It's unconditional love,” he continued.

The stunning incident was captured on a nearby surveillance camera. One of the thieves ran up behind the vet and whacked him on the head. A startled Lebron tumbled down the stairs afterwards, and Mala was gone before he knew it. He has been unable to track her down ever since, and he’s desperately asking for the public’s help.

“[If] you see something, say something - because I need her and she needs me,” Lebron said.

While it’s unclear exactly why Mala was taken, there are concerns that she was targeted for a dog fighting ring as she’s a pit bull. Lebron also notes that one of the attackers may have been his wife’s ex-boyfriend, as he has had some run-ins with the man in the past.

Regardless of who may be responsible, this is an incredibly traumatizing experience for a man that has already dealt with more trauma than the average person should have to experience. To think that the animal that was helping him deal with his PTSD was stolen from him after an unprovoked attack is truly heartbreaking.

There’s a $1,000 reward up for anyone that may find the missing pup, but hopefully there’s enough incentive to go around without any monetary reward necessary for those that find Mala. Whoever was heartless enough to pull off this attack needs to be brought to justice, and as many books as possible need to be thrown at them for good measure. Perhaps there can also be some kind of mandatory training on the horrors of dealing with PTSD thrown in for good measure.
