Colorado Business Gave This Group Nearly 200 Jobs, Now They Regret It

More than 200 workers walked off the job at Cargill Meat Solutions in Fort Morgan, Colorado in a dispute over a recently-enacted corporate policy. The workers are practicing Muslims, and the company previously accommodated prayer requests. As the Denver Post reports, some of them eventually returned to the job, but about 190 of them have been fired for holding out.

Curiously, the plant had previously even provided a prayer room for the employees. They were allowed to pray at different times of the day, typically in blocks of five-to-ten minutes. Prayers were tended to during unpaid lunch breaks, or as part of allotted 15-minute breaks. Some of the employees have worked at the plant for up to 10 years.

“The workers were told: ‘If you want to pray, go home,’ ” said Jaylani Hussein, a spokesman and executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

CAIR was attempting to negotiate with Cargill on behalf of the employees, but they were informed of the mass firing, with company execs noting that was due to “no call, no show, walk out.”

Hussein still hopes to make progress by speaking with Cargill, but typical corporate policy states that terminated employees can not reapply for six months.

“They feel missing their prayer is worse than losing their job. It’s like losing a blessing from God,” Hussein explained.

“These are people who want to work. If they’re allowed to return to work, we will continue to negotiate,” said Jenifer Hicks, also of CAIR.

No word on whether the employees were given any kind of notice prior to the policy change, but based on the reaction, it doesn’t seem as though they felt as if they had any other choice than to stage a walkout. That led to an unfortunate situation and a bad look for Cargill, as it now appears as if this may have been an attempt to force out the employees.
