Wife and K-9 Partner Honor Fallen Police Officer

On May 5, Lt. Eric Eslary, a 17-year veteran of the Ligonier Township Police Department in western Pennsylvania, was killed by a drunk driver who'd crossed over into the wrong lane on U.S. Route 30 after an evening of beer-drinking. Eslary was an advocate for their K-9 program, and his K-9 partner Blek, was badly injured but refused to leave his partner's side until his wife Mary Beth Taylor-Eslary came to collect him. Taylor-Eslary said "It's hard to believe it's over. He vanished that night." Christy Boyd, who is a photographer, lives in the same community. In 2008, Boyd's stepson died in a car crash and boyd wanted to do something to help Taylor-Eslary.

Boyd doesn't charge for her work. Instead, she sometimes asks clients to make a donation to a scholarship fund in her son's name. So, on June 28, Boyd took Taylor-Eslary and Blek on an emotional photo shoot. Taylor-Eslary said that Blek is "95 percent back to his old self," and will soon officially retire into life as a pet to stay with Taylor-Eslary. She also says "It's an honor for me to be taking care of Blek. It's nice for everyone to see that Blek is well."

The photo series shows Taylor-Eslary, with Blek, holding up various, beautiful signs such as one that reads "We Had Ups & Downs But Together We Had It All." In addition, Taylor-Eslary said she and her husband laughed all the time; that life without him is boring. Of the photos, Boyd said, "I just wanted it to be perfect. To me, this is telling their love story."
