Shark Nearly Bites Teen Girl's Legs Off, She Cocks Back And Saves Her Own Life

A Kentucky teen was visiting Florida and enjoying a day on the beach. During a swim, the teen was bit on the leg and several times on her face by a shark. She managed to escape by punching the fish in the nose.

Caitlyn Taylor, 17, was enjoying the crystal blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico on a beach in the Florida panhandle. She had only waded in waist-deep when she felt teeth sinking into her legs. To her horror, it was a shark.

Witnesses couldn't identify the species but said the shark looked to be about five feet long.

The athletic girl, who was in town to compete in a softball tournament, began defending herself against the vicious animal. She valiantly fought back.

“She punched it several times in the face and mouth area with both hands,” said Michele Nicholson, a spokeswoman for the sheriff’s office, to TIME Magazine.

Smithsonian.com reports that shark attacks on humans are extremely rare. Most people have heard that punching a shark in the nose is the best way to ward off an attack, but David Shiffman, a Ph.D. student at the University of Miami’s Abess Center for Ecosystem Science and Policy, says that's not the best advice.

"Have you ever tried punching underwater? It doesn’t work very well," he said. Shiffman told the Smithsonian that jabbing the shark in the eye is a better option.

Nicholson said that it's unclear why the shark retreated from the attack and swam away, but the punches might have had something to do with it. “You do whatever you can to drive it away," said Nicholson.

Taylor took to Twitter to report on her own condition and thank her well-wishers. She also sent photos of her injuries.

"Beyond lucky to be alive and well and thank you to everyone for the support and wishes,” she said. “I'm going to be okay.”
