A Muslim Enclave From A London Borough Has Voted To Ban Donald Trump From Visiting

A Muslim-majority borough in London has taken a stand against U.S. President Donald Trump. According to Breitbart, the East London borough – which allegedly has the highest percentage of Muslims in the entire United Kingdom – has passed an anti-Trump motion, voting to ban Trump from moving through the area if he travels to the U.K.

The resolution passed by the Tower Hamlet council has triggered a nation-wide debate about the authority and responsibilities of borough councils. Now, the spotlight is on the anti-Trump borough council, and things aren’t looking good for the controversial organization.

According to Breitbart, the Muslim-majority council is renowned as one of the most scandalous councils in London. In the last year alone, the council has been the subject of a corruption probe and numerous council members have been questioned by the authorities.

Following the investigation, an Islamist mayor, who was supported by the borough council, was removed after being convicted of bribing Muslim community groups and enforcing “undue spiritual influence” on his constituents.

The Tower Hamlets council is also the subject of an ongoing investigation into postal vote fraud.
The latest controversy began when two Councilors, Ohid Ahmed and Oliur Rahman, proposed that the borough council enact a ban on President Trump moving through the boundary lines of the borough.

The proposal emphasizes that if Trump’s plans to visit the U.K. weren’t immediately scrapped, the council would take matters into its own hands. “Should the Government still choose to go ahead with State Visit, this Council makes clear that President Trump would not be welcome in our Borough,” read a council meeting memo.

The memo also specifies that President Trump will not be allowed entry to prominent landmarks within the borough, including Tower Bridge and Canary Wharf. However, central government representatives have already criticized the vote, with a spokesperson for regional borough cooperation calling the outcome “un-enforceable.”

John Biggs, the current Labour mayor, has also chimed in on the subject, telling local media outlets that President Trump “doesn’t applaud diversity [and] doesn’t respect the culture of others and doesn’t respect women”.

“He is failing in his leadership and we should not welcome him here,” he continued. “We must be vigorous in our intolerance of his intolerance.”

As the controversy grew, the majority leader for the conservative group within the Tower Hamlets council slammed the vote, tweeting: “In 2015 one of the Tower Hamlets First election candidates tweeted ‘let us support Hitler the Great.’ These people, corruptly elected, have no shame. For the record, our group refused to vote in this farce.”

The initial statements in the motion have since been released to the public after local media outlets obtained copies of the council meeting memo. “Tower Hamlets is home to one of the country’s most diverse communities,” began the motion.

Following a lengthy introduction, the motion document also emphasized that Tower Hamlets “has the highest percentage of Muslim residents in England – 35 per cent compared with the national average of 5 per cent.”

The initial proceedings pay particular attention to ‘diversity’, and ‘community cohesion’, with Councilor Ahmed describing the need to pushback against President Trump’s so-called Islamophobic comments.

The motion finishes with a call for borough residents to respond to Trump’s “bigoted attitude towards women, ethnic minorities and Muslims which has resulted in examples of division and hatred within the USA and beyond.”
