Home Improvement Project Leads To Nail In Heart For Wisconsin Man

Some folks are quite handy and able to tackle simple home improvement projects all by themselves. Others are not quite as skilled. For the latter category, there’s a ton of contractors that will be happy to take the projects off of their hands.

This man from Wisconsin definitely sounds like the handy type, but he may be seeking out the services from contractors for the foreseeable future. That’s because he just wound up in the hospital with a nail in his heart. Yes, directly in his heart.

As the Huffington Post shares, Doug Bergeson was framing out a fireplace at a home he’s building when the accident happened. He was using a high-powered nail gun, and the unthinkable happened.

“I was just bringing the nail gun forward, and I was on my tip-toes,” he explained. “I just didn’t quite have enough room, and it fired before I was really ready for it, and then it dropped down and fired again.”

One of the nails ricocheted, and it became lodged in his chest.

“I looked down [and] I couldn’t see anything,” he continued. “I could see the nail moving with my heartbeat. It was kind of twitching with every heartbeat.”

The man was obviously terrified, but he had the presence of mind to remember the fate of ‘Crocodile Hunter’ Steve Irwin, who was stabbed in the chest by a stingray. Irwin instinctively removed the stingray, and he would succumb to his injuries. Bergeson wasn’t about to make the same mistake.

He was able to drive himself to an area medical center, and he was rushed to Aurora BayCare Medical Center in Green Bay. He would undergo open-heart surgery, and his surgeon would note that the nail was just an eighth of an inch from a major artery. Bergeson is beyond fortunate that his freak accident didn’t turn out to be much worse.

“Had he been leaning just so or had his heart been in a different part of the beating cycle we could’ve had a very different situation on our hands,” said Dr. Alexander Roitstein.

Roitstein notes that his patient recounted how the story of Irwin impacted his decision-making.

“That’s what played through his head,” Roitstein continued.

Amazingly, Bergeson was only in the hospital for two days. There was no major damage done, and he’s been cleared to return to his job at Village of Lena waterworks plant.

“I feel pretty good,” he added. “I’m back to doing things carefully. It was a pretty awakening experience.”

It’s unclear if he’s also resumed his home improvement project, but we’ll imagine he’ll be extra cautious with high-powered nail guns moving forward. This was a scary accident that could’ve turned out far worse, and the rest of us can use it as another sign that an abundance of caution must be used when working with dangerous tools. Of course, those that like to keep contractors gainfully employed don’t have to worry about it all that much, but they do need to be mindful of the pain that can cause on the wallet.
