Florida Police Arrest Drunk Man Riding His Lawn Mower on the Highway

Kenneth Burton Alleshouse, a 56-year-old man from Florida, has been arrested after police spotted him driving along Highway 1 in his lawn mower. After pulling over the slow-going driver, Port St. highway patrol officers discovered that Mr. Alleshouse had been drinking heavily and was extremely drunk.

A statement from the local police department described the moment highway patrol officers saw Mr. Alleshouse in a ride-on red Snapper lawn mower. In the seating space next to him, Mr. Alleshouse had his hand on a full case of Budweiser beer.

According to Fox 13, Mr. Alleshouse “clearly smelled of alcohol” and was driving his lawn mower erratically on the side of the highway. When police tested Mr. Alleshouse’s blood-alcohol level, they were shocked to see a reading that was more than three times the legal limit. In Florida, this limit is .08.

After logging his reading, police arrested Mr. Alleshouse and apprehended his lawn mower. For the rest of the day, Mr. Alleshouse was detained at St. Lucie County Jail. It remains unclear if, and how much, Mr. Alleshouse has been fined for his behavior.

This is by no means the first time that police in Florida have witnessed and been a part of strange situations when handing out DUIs. Earlier this month, Lakeland police officers made a DUI after arresting a woman who was drunkenly galloping her horse on a busy highway.

The woman in question, 53-year-old Donna Byrne, was arrested by highway patrolmen after local drivers told police there was “a woman who appeared confused and possibly in danger along Combee Road near North Crystal Lake Road.”

When police officers arrived at the scene, they were stunned to see Ms. Byrne slumped over her horse, swaying in the seat and trying to gallop on the highway. When officers pulled the woman – who they described as red-eyed and reeking of alcohol – down from the saddle, she nearly collapsed.

When they tested Ms. Byrne’s blood-alcohol level, officers found that she was roughly twice Florida’s legal limit. After taking Ms. Byrne’s horse to the Polk County Sheriff's Animal Control livestock facility, Ms. Byrne was handed a DUI and charged with “animal neglect for endangering and failing to provide proper protection for her horse.”

Since being charged, Ms. Byrne appears to have returned home after being temporarily detained at Polk County Jail.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office has attempted to discourage anyone else from embarking on dangerous drunken adventures involving animals. "Ms. Byrne was obviously not in any condition to be on the road," declared Grady Judd, the Polk County Sheriff. "She not only put herself and the horse in danger but also anyone who was driving on the road, which is typically very busy."

Online commenters have already suggested that Ms. Byrne could fight her DUI, citing a Florida statute stating that a DUI can only be handed to people who are operating some form of vehicle. However, Sheriff Grady has tried to dispel this idea, saying: “Well, this in Polk County. You can get a DUI in a car, in a truck or on a horse.”
