Philadelphia Eagles Michael Bennett Indicted on Charges for Allegedly Assaulting an Elderly

Michael Bennett, defensive end for the Philadelphia Eagles, was indicted on charges for a 2017 incident in which he allegedly assaulted an elderly paraplegic. A warrant was issued for Bennett's arrest, but the football player has turned himself in peacefully. He's now facing felony charges.

Bennett attended the Super Bowl LI at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas in February of 2017. His brother, Martellus Bennett, was playing for the New England Patriots, and Michael was there to watch the game.

After the Patriots defeated the Atlanta Falcons, Bennett attempted to force open locked doors in the stadium to gain access to the field. A stadium worker stopped him to tell him that he wasn't authorized to go onto the field, so the NFL player shoved his way past her.

The worker was a 66-year-old wheelchair-bound woman, who was injured when he was forced aside by larger, younger man.

Another 28-year-old female employee was also reportedly pushed aside by Bennett. When officers attempted to question Bennett regarding the incidents, Bennett allegedly said to the officer, "F--k you!"

They exchanged some words and Bennet said nothing was going to stop him; he proceeded to head to the field.

At the time, assessing the situation, the officer decided that going alone to confront Bennett amid the chaos in the aftermath of the game might set the powerful NFL player off, and more injuries may result. The officer had recognized Bennett and understood his strength.

At the time he decided that Bennett would not be a threat to anyone else if he were able to get to the field as he desired, so the officer returned to check on the female victims.

Officers were assigned to investigate the incident further, though Bennett refused to respond to attempts to contact him. Ultimately the case was presented by a prosecutor to a grand jury, and an indictment was the result.

In a press conference last week, Chief Art Acevedo held a press conference to announce that Bennett was indicted. The officer noted that Bennett might have thought that because he was an NFL player that he could get away with disregarding stadium employees and police officers, but he’s glad that the grand jury decided this was not the case.

"We need to have respect and quite frankly when you are at that level in society where you are probably a multi-millionaire, how about treating people with dignity?" said the chief. "But more important, how about not putting your hands on a 66-year-old paraplegic?"

"He's morally bankrupt," added Chief Acevedo. "There's no excuse for that. None. Zero."

Bond for Bennett was set for $10,000. Thus far, the Philadelphia Eagle has yet to comment on the indictment or respond to the charges.

The Philadelphia Eagles put out the following statement: “We are aware of the situation involving Michael Bennett and are in the process of gathering more information. Because this is an ongoing legal matter we will have no further comment at this time.”

"Honestly, I don't think there's a tight end in the NFL that can block me," Bennett once said in an interview, which is something he might have thought of before pushing his way past an elderly woman in a wheel chair.

The woman sustained a shoulder injury in the incident and had to seek treatment for it.
