Young Teen Kills Himself, Leaves Behind Troubling Letter

A young Staten Island, New York boy tragically took his own life when he couldn't take being bullied anymore. The young boy left a heartbreaking suicide note in which he explains that he sought help, but the staff and faculty at his school failed him.

Daniel Fitzpatrick was only 13 years old when he was found hanged in his family home. His sister found him in the attic with his belt wrapped around his neck.

Before his death, Daniel had written a long letter to 'tell about my experience in Holy Angels Catholic Academy.'

"I gave up," he wrote in the note. "The teachers . . . they didn’t do anything."

Daniel had been bullied for a long time by kids at the Holy Angels Catholic Academy, and he was struggling. Teachers and even the principal turned a blind eye and a deaf ear to him. They refused to intervene.

Even teachers were known to bully Daniel, according to his siblings who also attended the school. One gym teacher called the overweight child 'lazy' in front of the class. Another teacher would humiliate Daniel by putting up papers with his slipping grades up for public display.

The school had actually returned a $100 pre-registration fee to the family over the summer, recommending that they send Daniel to another school to repeat the 7th grade.

“Danny said that he was afraid of his teachers,” his mom Maureen said. “He felt like the whole school knew what was going on and was laughing behind his back. They humiliated him.”

After that, Daniel penned the heartbreaking letter, but his family had no idea it was in part a suicide note. Maureen says she only knew he felt strongly about sending a message.

“Mom I want them to know what they did to me and how I feel,” Daniel told Maureen. “I want them to hear my story.”

“In light of this tragedy we are reexamining all bullying prevention policies and training,” said Carolyn Erstad, a spokeswoman for the Brooklyn/Queens Diocese.
