Young Teen Defends Himself, Stops Home Intruders

In a real-life 'Home Alone' situation, a 13-year-old boy in South Carolina was frightened when two burglars attempted to break into the home. Instead of putting together makeshift booby traps, though, this little boy went straight for his mother's gun to protect himself.

After a shoot-out with the culprits, one suspect is dead, another is headed to prison, and the boy is safe.

The family has opted to remain anonymous to protect the boy's identity, but the mother told The Post and Courier that she was completely stunned when she heard the news.

“I tell my kids that if anything ever happens to call 911, but I also tell them to protect themselves if they have to,” the mom told the Courier. “I never would have dreamed that this would have been a part of our day today.”

Her son was home alone at about 1:30 p.m. while she was at work. The boy reportedly became suspicious when he saw a strange vehicle pull up behind the house. He watched and saw a man trying to break into the back of the home.

Police on an arrest report say the boy 'feared for his safety' and grabbed his mother's firearm. He began shooting at the burglar.

The burglar returned fire and there was a brief shoot-out. The suspects jumped back into the vehicle and drove away. The boy said he continued shooting at them even as they drove away.

Neighbor Debbie Griffin was the one who called police. She was home that afternoon when she heard shots ring out.

At the time, her own son was outside, and he reportedly witnessed the attempted burglary. He told his mother that he saw the car pull up behind the house.

“I don’t know really what happened, but it kind of scared me,” Griffin said. “It was a little close.”

The young man had better aim than the burglars. One of the suspects was identified as 31-year-old Lamar Anthwan Brown, and the other as 28-year-old Ira Bennett. Brown had been hit three times.

Bennett drove Brown to the hospital, but the suspect died later of his injuries. Brown told officials at the time that someone shot at his vehicle while he was driving.

Police went to investigate the home shooting and found a pistol on the lawn that did not belong to the family. Bennett was arrested.

Bennet and Brown both have long criminal records that include assault, burglary, and drug charges. Bennett was arrested and charged with charged with first-degree burglary and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.

The boy was unharmed. “I’m speechless right now,” his mother said. “Who knows how this would have turned out.”

The mother says her child is a quiet, well-behaved kid. He doesn't want to publicly comment on the incident, but he's reportedly told family members that he wishes the shooting never happened.

“I’m always scared; there’s so much going on all the time in Charleston,” said the mother, who is considering moving. “All I can do is continue to pray and hope it gets better.”
