You Won't Believe What Profession Hides Sex Offenders In Plain Sight

According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, sexual abuse by doctors against patients is quite widespread in the US. However, the fragmented medical oversight system keeps most offenders' actions in secrecy, meaning a significant percentage of doctors are allowed to treat patients even after substantive allegations of sexual misconduct.

"Some of these doctors are the most prolific sex offenders in the country with hundreds and, in some cases, thousands of victims," AJC reporter Carrie Teegardin noted.

The AJC investigation started when reporter Danny Robbins found that Georgia prison doctors were allowed to continue to work in prisons even after documentation of sexual misconduct.

Many high-profile doctors are the initiators of unwanted sexual advances, according to the AJC report. The sexual assaults range from seduction to fondling to rape.

"In recent years, critical attention has been focused nationwide on the military, Boy Scouts, colleges and the Catholic Church for turning a blind eye to sexual abuse," according to the introduction to the AJC report. "In each case, institutions and professions responded to create strict accountability and restore public trust. But one profession has escaped broad scrutiny."

The AJC report highlighted that accountability is quite low in the medical profession.

The American Medical Association, for example, has a zero-tolerance policy against sexual assault, but the AMA does not automatically expel members for sexual assault.

The AJC report determined that physicians regularly escape national tracking systems. In some instances, the assault is documented such as to hide the full extent of the crime. In some examples, the cases were not even reported at all.
