Yazidi Women Risk Their Lives To Escape ISIS Captors

An ad reading “Virgin. Beautiful. 12 years old.... Her price has reached $12,500 and she will be sold soon” was recently seen on an encrypted Telegram app, and was shared with the AP by a Yazidi activist, who is one of many working to free the around 3,000 women and girls held as sex slaves by ISIS members.

ISIS is steadily losing control of territory in its self-styled caliphate, and has responded by taking Yazidis sex slaves deeper into its territory and trying to sell them on popular encrypted apps such as Telegram and WhatsApp, according to an AP investigation

However, the jihadists have recently begun focusing on smugglers who rescue captives, and have set up a slave database with captives' photos and owners' names to stop any more escapes through checkpoints.

Several thousand Kurdish-speaking Yazidis were captured and thousands of others were massacred in cold blood when ISIS took their northern Iraqi villages almost exactly two years ago.

Many of the Yazidi captives were conscripted as sex slaves, but smugglers had freed 2,554 women and girls as of May 2016. The recent ISIS crackdown, however, has reduced the number to just 39 escapees over the last six weeks, based on statistics kept by the local Kurdistan government.
