This World-Renowned TV Star Just Passed Away, He Was 84

Fans of classic movies on cable television are quite familiar with Robert Osborne, the longtime host of Turner Classic Movies. Sadly, Osborne has passed away at the age of 84. As CNN shares, the film expert is remembered by colleagues as a man that helped introduce a whole new generation of fans to Hollywood’s storied history.

"All of us at Turner Classic Movies are deeply saddened by the death of Robert Osborne. He joined us as an expert on classic film and grew to be our cherished colleague and esteemed ambassador for TCM," a statement from Jennifer Dorian, general manager of Turner Classic Movies, read in part.

Osborne has been a part of the network since its debut back in 1994, and he also has a few acting credits of his own on his lengthy resume. He appeared on “The Beverly Hillbillies” and in "The Man with Bogart's Face."

"Robert was embraced by devoted fans who saw him as a trusted expert and friend. His calming presence, gentlemanly style, encyclopedic knowledge of film history, fervent support for film preservation and highly personal interviewing style all combined to make him a truly world-class host," the statement continued.

He moved to Hollywood in his younger days to pursue his dream of becoming an actor and was once mentored by Lucille Ball. While best known as the host on TCM, he was also the author of a long-running column known as ‘Rambling Reporter,’ which ran for a staggering 27 years in the industry leading publication ‘The Hollywood Reporter.’ In addition to that well-received column, Osborne also authored several popular books on the history of the Academy Awards.

"Robert's contributions were fundamental in shaping TCM into what it is today and we owe him a debt of gratitude that can never be repaid," the statement said.

No cause of death has been announced as of yet. Osborne will be sorely missed by viewers, colleagues, friends and family.
