Women Are Outraged By Jail's Request Before Entering

There are a number of female defense attorneys in Portland, Maine who are now protesting the new policy that requires they remove their bras with underwire prior to meeting with the clients who are in jail, since these will set off the metal detectors.

According to Amy Fairfield, an attorney in Portland, “It’s absolutely outrageous.” Fairfield found out about the policy when she visited the facility on September 10th. The lawyer was told to leave after she made the metal detectors go off and refused to remove her bra.

Fairfield went on to state the officer who would not let her enter, “He said, ‘Are you wearing an underwire bra? Might I suggest you go to the bathroom and take that off?’” She responded to the guard by stating, “I will not. I am completely offended at that notion.”

While Fairfield has been asked to remove hair clips and jewelry in the past, she has never been told to remove her bra. This policy was created by the administrator at the jail, Maj. John Costello. While Fairfield tried to contact Costello in regard to the policy, he never responded. “They are just inviting a lawsuit,” she said. “It’s discriminatory, it’s harassing and it’s a constitutional issue.” The jail's policy is to go through the metal detector, and there is no way to tell if it is going off because of wire in a bra or if the person is hiding a gun.
