Woman's Hearing Was Declining, Then The Gross Problem Was Removed

One woman in the U.K. who was hard of hearing was starting to find it even harder to hear. The woman couldn't even rely on her hearing aide, because when she would put it in her ear it would whistle and shriek annoyingly. A man who calls himself the 'Wax Whisperer' got to the heart of the matter: a big wax blockage built up in the woman's ear canal.

Neel Raithatha runs the Leicestershire, England hearing clinic. When a woman walked in complaining about her hearing and hearing aid, he was pretty sure he knew what the problem would be-- and he was right. The woman had a huge ball of wax blocking her ear canal.

“The client in this case wore a hearing aid which can cause earwax build up as it can prevent the natural migration of earwax out of the ear canal," said Raithatha. “Regular use of ear wax drops and avoiding using cotton buds can sometimes help prevent a build-up of earwax.”

Unfortunately for this patient, things had gotten out of control. “The patient had a fungal infection, otomycosis, which developed on the dead earwax and skin and also otitis externa of the ear canal and eardrum," said Raithatha. “Otomycosis usually occurs in hotter climates and is more common in people who swim regularly and have diabetes.”

The infection on this woman's ear had gone beyond anything she could have handled herself. A fungal infection had grown on the ball of wax, and it was causing the woman pain and further affecting her hearing.

“It would be impossible to self-remove,” Neel said.

Raithatha used a tiny camera and a suction implement to remove the debris from the woman's ear. The shocking video is not for those with a weak stomach. People who have a fascination with gross medical procedures, however, have found it brilliant.

The video shows the woman's ear jam-packed with crusty white and yellow gunk. Raithatha attempts to use suction to draw it out, but the job is so tedious in the beginning that he speeds up the film. Finally, Raithatha loosens the wax enough to begin balling it up into a single, solid mass. He carefully wiggles it back and forth, loosening it even further, then pulls out a massive wax ball.

Raithatha then goes back in to pick up a few extra bits clogging the woman's ear, and to clean the sides of the ear canal, which were coated in wax.

“There was some offensive odor from the ear,” Raithatha said. “It took around 10 minutes because I had to be very delicate when peeling the dead infected skin off the ear canal and eardrum. It usually takes half the time. “It was very rewarding in that I was able to help the client as she was very depressed that she couldn’t hear.”

The woman had to get a follow-up appointment to treat the fungal infection in her ear, but the wax removal treatment made a huge difference.

If you thought watching that big ball of wax being wrestled free was strangely appealing, you’re not alone. Raithatha has a YouTube channel, and fans of ear wax removal have been enjoying watching the oddly satisfying videos. He's gotten millions of views.
