Woman's Cigarette Blows Up Car After She Forgets What's Next To Her

When you get a new product, you’ll find some of the craziest warning signs. A heat gun that blasts temperatures of 800 degrees has a warning telling people not to use it as a hair drier. An electric drill warns customers not to use it on their head. A bottle of bug killer warns people not to spray it in their eyes. You have to wonder what kinds of complaints the company got to prompt such warnings. Some propane tank grills might have a few new warnings to plaster on their boxes now: don’t transport your propane grill without turning the gas off. Don’t leave gas on in an enclosed vehicle. Don’t smoke when transporting propane in your car.

A woman in Florida and her husband were injured after she decided to light a cigarette in their car. The couple were carrying a propane gas grill and not shut off the gas flow. The car was totaled, but miraculously the passengers survived.

The couple were driving in their red Kia Sorento through Orlando on Sunday with the propane grill, and the gas grill's valve was switched to an on position. They didn't realize it, but the car had been filling up with flammable gas.

As they drove by the Central Florida Fairgrounds, the wife decided to light a cigarette. The flame resulted in an explosion. That blew out the windows and peeled open the roof.

The husband, who was driving, lost control of the car in the blast. He drove off the road and crashed into a pole. Thankfully, no other cars were involved in the accident.

The man and the woman suffered from burns, but none were life-threatening. They were both taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Images of the accident were posted on social media by the Orlando Police Department. The shocking photos show just how powerful the blast must have been.

The National Fire Prevention Association reports that there are 7,000 gas grill fires every year. In 2013, an ABC reporter was grilling in her back yard when her outdoor propane grill exploded. The grill had gone out, and when she went to relight the flame, there was a cloud of invisible propane hovering in and around the grill.

Propane gas is heavier than air, so it will fill up a space and takes a long time to disperse, and that's when a grill is standing out in open air. Inside a car, that gas would become trapped and quickly build.

When transporting your barbecue in a car, don't just rely on turning off the switch. After grilling, detach the tank and leave the grill out in open air for five or 10 minutes to ensure all of the gas is dispersed.

Make sure you detach the propane tank from the grill and shut off the valve. Place the tank inside a well-ventilated area (not the trunk) in the vehicle in an upright position. Never leave the tank in an enclosed car on a hot day.

And of course, just as a precaution, don't smoke or light any fires while the tank is in there.
