Woman Thrown Out Of Apartment Pool Because Of Outfit- Do You Have A Problem With It?

A resident of Smoky Crossing Apartments in Tennessee, Toni Jenkins, was outraged after an apartment staff member approached and asked her to leave the swimming pool because she was wearing a ‘revealing’ swimsuit.

Ms. Jenkins was staying at the apartment with Tyler Newman, her fiancé, and had decided to cool off by taking a swim. However, according to apartment staff, several other apartment residents complained about Ms. Jenkins’ swimming suit, a pink one-piece.

The staff member allegedly told the woman that she had to “cover up or leave,” warning her that her swimming attire might “excite” a group of teenage boys who were also swimming in the pool.

Mr. Newman has lashed out at the staff member, accusing Smoky Cross Apartments of shaming his fiancé. In an exasperated and furious Facebook post, Mr. Newman wrote: “I have never really witnessed sexual harassment and/or ‘rape culture’ until today with Smoky Crossing Apartments. Today my fiancée was faced with either changing her bathing suit, covering up with shorts, or leaving the pool.”

Ms. Jenkins’ outraged partner described the unbelievable accusations levelled at his fiancé, writing: “Tori was accused of wearing a ‘thong bathing suit’ and told there were complaints about the way she was dressed after roughly three minutes tops of us arriving there. We both kind of sat there in disbelief.”

After leaving the pool area, the disgusted pair attempted to complain to the building’s leasing consultant. However, their protests fell on deaf ears, with Mr. Newman saying: “The consultant told Tori that if she didn’t have kids herself, she wouldn’t understand."

He then continued, "She was told that the leasing consultant wouldn’t want her own kids around Tori. The woman told Tori that a ‘normal bathing suit covers your entire butt’ and again deemed my fiancée’s body inappropriate. She was told that her body, because it’s built more curvy than others, is ‘too inappropriate’ for children to be around.”

Mr. Newman was relentless in his criticism of the staff at Smoky Cross Apartments, emphasizing the impact of the incident on his fiancé, writing: “Today my fiancée was told that she is less important than how men feel around her.

Newman went on to write, "That Tori is less important than a man’s urges to be sexual towards her. I think she’s the most beautiful woman in the world, but I also respect her. I would never make her or any other woman feel less than what she’s worth because of her outfit or her looks. This is how rape culture continues to grow.”

“I’ve never seen my fiancée embarrassed to the point where she can’t even look her best friends in the face. I’ve never seen her cry like she did in our apartment today. Never seen her want to be isolated like that. All because some ignorant assholes think they can police the size and shape of her body. I’ve never seen a woman so disrespected.”

The social media response to Mr. Newman’s post has been enormous, receiving over 32,000 reactions, with the majority of Facebook users rallying around Ms. Jenkins. On her own Facebook account, Ms. Jenkins thanked people for their support and tried to address some of the negative comments about the issue, receiving more than 3200 likes and hundreds of supportive comments.

A spokesperson for Smoky Crossing has released a statement, denying that Ms. Jenkins was asked to leave the pool, saying: “Smoky Crossing is a welcoming family community. Multiple residents within our community complained and expressed concerns regarding Ms. Jenkins’ swimwear.

The spokesperson continued, "In accordance with our pool policies, which are posted near the swimming area, one of our leasing consultants requested Ms. Jenkins wrap a towel around herself when she was walking around the pool. Ms. Jenkins was never asked to leave the pool.”
