Woman Spends Youth Tanning And Gets Skin Cancer

Carol Leech, 58, grew up like any other kid of her generation. They would play outside with friends quite often. As a result, they considered a tan a sign of health. Leech explained, “Our generation spent much more time outdoors than the youngsters of today and having a ‘good tan’ was a sign of being healthy." Now, her face is covered in scars, and she looks like a "car crash victim."

Leech went on to say, "My sister and I used to lie in the back garden and put on this olive oil and vinegar mix. We didn’t know anything different back then."

At one point, she even got herself a tanning bed to have a more consistent glow. Then, one day, Carol noticed an odd freckle under her nose that had not been there before. She had doctors examine it, and they diagnosed it as the deadliest type of skin cancer — malignant melanoma. Doctors scheduled for her to have the cancer removed, but they also had to reconstruct her lips and face when they were done.

Leech shared, "I looked like I had been in a car crash, but my surgeon assured me it would heal well and recommended massage techniques using skin repair cream and bio oil once the stitches were removed."

She continued, “To say I was devastated is an understatement. I felt immense guilt at letting my husband and family down and was terrified of the future and what it might mean."

Today, Carol wants to use her story as a warning to others. She stated, "Unfortunately, even though most people now know of the dangers, there are still many that are not all taking the right sort of precautions."

Carol uses SPF 50 and encourages others to do the same.
