Woman Shocked When She Sees What Cashier Wrote On Receipt

A woman went to get a refreshing smoothie on a hot day, but the cashier didn't ask for her name. Since she regularly buys smoothies at the chain, she knew getting the name of the customer was part of the process, so she was curious as to why she wasn't asked. When she got her receipt, she couldn't believe what the cashier wrote in the name field.

Cassandra Peoples bought a 'Detox Island' smoothie on Wednesday at Tropical Smoothie Cafe, something the 47-year-old treats herself to regularly. When she didn't know the cashier, and the cashier didn't ask her name as usual, she was curious as to why and checked her receipt.

Instead of finding her name where it usually is, Peoples found that the cashier simply called her, "Black chick."

"When I saw ‘black chick’ where the name was supposed to be, I’m like, ‘I know I told them Cassandra,’” Peoples said to WGFL. “I’ve never experienced anything disrespectful like that before. I wouldn’t want to say it's racist, it's just disrespectful.”

Peoples tried contacting the company's main office, but her voicemails went ignored. Instead, she reported the rude comment to The Independent Florida Alligator, the student newspaper at the University of Florida. She believes the cashier was irritated because she pointed out that she was making the drink wrong.

A photo of the receipt was posted to a Gainesville, Florida Facebook page. Hundreds of people responded with outrage.

Tropical Smoothie Cafe's corporate headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia finally responded to the situation to say they have dealt with the problem. The general manager of the Cafe posted on the Facebook page that the employee who wrote the rude remark was fired.

Peoples says she doesn't care about an apology, she just wants to know why this happened. “I mean I want some answers,” she told WGFL. “Cassandra. My birth name. Not a black chick.”

With cash registers being computers these days, more and more incidents like this have been showing up across the country. With receipts in hand to prove it, people have vented on social media when they found that their lunch receipt described them as ‘lil’ ugly dude’ or ‘fat girls’.

In many cases, the comments on the offending receipts are racial slurs. One black couple found that a store employee printed "dumb [N-word]" on their receipt. An Asian woman reported once that a New York cafe employee wrote 'Ching Chong' on her receipt in the name field. Another Asian woman got a receipt that referred to her as ‘lady chinky eyes’.

In other instances, some restaurant workers have written sexist messages on the receipt, such as one waiter who added 'Best Butt' and 'Best Looking' to a customer's order (charging nothing for each item). Another waiter trying to pick up a female customer wrote his name and number and urged her to call him.

Considering a printed receipt and a computer record make it impossible for a cashier to get away with this kind of discretion, it’s amazing that workers will still try to get away with it. Granted, plenty of people don’t even look at their receipts and probably never notice the insults or inappropriate remarks, but it only takes one person calling to complain to put an employee’s job at risk. On a frustrating day at work, it may seem funny at the moment to insult a customer, but the customer may end up with the last laugh when the cashier is out of a job.
