Woman Saw Soldier Standing At Attention In Pouring Rain, Was Moved To Tears When She Realized Why

A woman driving home in the pouring rain was, like many other commuters, just looking forward to getting someplace warm and dry. Up ahead, she spotted a vehicle that had stopped in the middle of the road, blocking her path.

She slowed down, wondering what was going on. She then noticed a solider standing outside the vehicle attention.

When she realized what was going on, it touched her deeply. She shared the experience on the Facebook page, 'Love What Matters'.

Erin Hester says when she first saw the man standing outside of his jeep, she was confused. But when she looked around, she realized that a funeral procession was going by, and she was immediately touched by the soldier's behavior.

"I always get frustrated when I see cars that don't pull to the side and stop for a procession, but this gentlemen went above and beyond," she wrote in her Facebook account.

Hester says she's pretty sure there is no rule requiring the soldier to stop and stand in the rain while a hearse and mourners go by.

"I feel pretty confident that there isn't a military rule that soldiers have to do this. This made my heart happy to see the amount of respect that this gentleman showed a family that he doesn't even know," she adds.

The motorist snapped a picture of the soldier to share online. The story has been shared more than 5,000 times.

Many people believe the habit of pulling over for funeral processions has sadly fallen out of fashion. This little sign of respect for a mourning family can mean so much, many people argued.

"It's such a small gesture that means so very much when you are in the procession, grieving a loss, and you see that for a brief moment in time, people you don't even know are acknowledging that loss. That connection, though brief, is so encouraging," said one commenter on the Facebook page.

"When my grandma died as we were heading from the funeral to the burial, the highway was undergoing about 5 miles of a widening project. What was so moving is that every piece of equipment stopped and every man working on that project dropped their tools or stepped out of their machine, removed their hard hats and stood at attention as we passed. I'll never forget it," said another commenter.

"I was more surprise when my dad passed away how many now days don't pull over. I see it as these souls travel to their resting place they deserve the respect," added another commenter.

Not everyone thought pulling over was necessary, however. Many argued that it's a 'regional thing', and that it's not something that most people are used to.

"I never pull over, the way I see it that person is not in a hurry to get to where their going but I am. I actually feel like the people that drive in those very long funeral processions are disrespecting me. They all could leave and meet without holding up traffic. I don't know the dead person so I don't owe them anything including respect," said one commenter.

It's exactly that kind of attitude that causes people with more respect for the dearly departed, and those in mourning for them, to get choked up by the simple gesture of pulling over and standing respectfully.
