Unnamed Woman Returned $5,500 To Massachusetts Police – Or Did She?

Police are trying to track down an unnamed Hingham woman after she returned a thick Citizens Bank envelope – with the label $5,500.00 written on the front – to police without opening the package.

Although this situation sounds like something you might see on ‘What Would You Do?’, ABC’s local media affiliate, WCVB, have guaranteed that the incident was no prank.

After the unidentified woman returned the envelope, Hingham police cut open the packaging in an attempt to ascertain who owned the enormous sum of cash.

However, when police opened the envelope, all they found was a pile of old newspaper clippings and a note that read: “Sorry, just a prank.”

Nevertheless, local police have still emphasized how impressed they are by the woman’s honesty and integrity, praising her for having the self-control to leave the envelope unopened.

The Hingham Police Department went on to publicly laud the woman on their Facebook page, writing:

“It's always refreshing to see honest people. We know there are so many more honest people than dishonest ones, but in our line of work, we don't usually meet them.

A woman found this envelope (from Citizens Bank with $5,500.00 written on it) Saturday in a Hingham parking lot and without even opening it, came to our police station to turn it in. We opened it but it actually contained newspaper that was cut up to look like cash with a note inside saying it was a prank.

Our point is she didn't know it was a prank and did the right thing.”

The post received over 100 likes on Facebook, and is already starting to go viral. Unsurprisingly, the majority of Facebook users couldn’t help but respond positively to the story.

“Good to see that there are still some honest people out there! Props to the woman who turned this in!” wrote Jessie Deitsch.

However, many other commenters, like Mark Bell, had a cheekier reply for Hingham police officers, saying: “$5500 richer and got y'all duped, too....m-a-y-b-e....Good story from you folks, HPD...Kudos to the lady. I just thought I'd add a wrinkle to it.”

Another Facebook user, Kevin O’Connor, also expressed some doubt at the story, commenting: “If it was a prank though what kid draws the two zeros and underscore it like that... maybe Someone wants attention.”

Robert Eve couldn’t resist making another joke in the comments section, writing: “Little did the pranksters know, their fingerprints are all over the paper and Hingham PD is sending them a ticket for littering.”

This isn’t the first time that a US Police Department has praised Good Samaritans for handing in lost wallets or jewelry items. In Colorado, Leigh Valley Live aired a viral report on an unnamed woman who immediately handed in $600 after she found an opened envelop filled with wads of cash.

When the envelope was returned to its owner, the Colorado woman turned down the offer of a reward, saying “Anyone would or should have done what I did that day.”
