Woman Put In Jail After Authorities In Mexico Discover This Inside Red Container In Her Purse

Traveling while under the weather can be pretty inconvenient as it is, but when that same cold leads you to spend time in the slammer, it can make the whole trip just downright dreadful. According to CBS Chicago, that’s exactly what happened to this Chicago man during a recent trip to Mexico.

Steven Gaines, 60, was traveling with his fiancé, Patty Kozer, to Puerto Vallarta as a little celebration for their recent engagement. He was a bit under the weather with sinus trouble, and purchased some over the counter medication from Walgreens to alleviate his symptoms.

Unbeknownst to Steven, those same pills are apparently considered a controlled substance in Mexico, and he was thrown in jail.

"I said I was unaware that it was a controlled substance, would they please throw it away and allow us to leave the airport and go on to our hotel and I was informed that no, that I had committed a violation by bringing it into the country," Steven explains.

After his fiancée spoke with the American Consulate and some attorneys, they would be able to get out of the jam by paying a $2,500 fine, but that would turn out to be nothing more than a successful shakedown. Steven is working on filing a complaint, and is hoping others will learn from his experience.
