Woman Pops Pimple, Almost Dies

We’ve always been fixated by gross things, whether it’s mucus, fingernails or pimples. However, the latter appears to be surging in popularity in recent years, with videos of extractions and cyst draining racking up millions of views every year.

Despite the gross pleasure of squeezing blackheads and pimples, it’s important to remember that popping a pimple is the most ineffective way of getting rid of the unsightly spot.

Every time you pop a pimple, you are increasing the likelihood that the bacteria from your hands is spreads across your face, creating secondary infections. One girl, Katie Wright, is deeply familiar with how traumatic such a scenario can be.

When Ms. Wright noticed a large, uncomfortable pimple on her forehead, she assumed it was just a blind spot under her skin – something that she needed to squeeze to remove.

“A week ago I decided to pick at what I thought was a giant under the skin pimple because it had been hurting for a while and got too painful to ignore,” wrote the exasperated young lady. However, after she squeezed the deeply embedded ‘pimple’, Ms. Wright began to feel unwell.

Within an hour, her condition worsened, with Ms. Wright tweeting: “my entire face swelled up and HURT. It felt like something was going to burst out of my skin. I went to the emergency room and they said it was a very serious case of Cellulitis, which is a version of a Staph infection.”

After being rushed to the hospital, doctors quickly concluded that Ms. Wright was suffering from a staph infection. The ‘pimple’ was actually a sign that the infection was affecting Ms. Wright’s deep cellular tissue.

Fortunately, Ms. Wright was taken to the hospital before the infection could develop into something life-threatening. Considering the position of the infection and Ms. Wright’s decision to squeeze her forehead, there were concerns that the staph infection could have spread to the young girl’s eyes or brain.

Ms. Wright believes that the infection was originally caused by her eyebrow brush, a tool that she hadn’t washed or cleaned for a very long time. After she recovered, Ms. Wright was able to return home, where it’s unlikely that she will be squeezing her pimples anytime soon.

Ms. Wright has also shown that she is not unwilling to make a joke at her own expense, tweeting a before-and-after picture of her with the infection, captioning the photo: “when you go viral for being ugly.”

Ms. Wright has also received an outcry of support from other online commenters, with many people supporting her story and telling stories about similar incidents. One Twitter user, KT Grissom, uploaded her own before-and-after photo, writing: “My little sister had the same thing.”

To reduce your chances of contracting a staph infection or other avoidable skin conditions, expert cosmeticians encourage you to wear sunscreen every day, reduce the amount and regularity of makeup that you wear and frequently wash your makeup brushes and equipment.
