Woman Plows Through Crosswalk, Takes Out 3 Girls - Faces The Consequences

According to police, a woman in Oregon who hit three teens in a crosswalk with her car was taking a video of her baby while she was driving.

The woman, Elizabeth Rachel Dove, faces third-degree assault, reckless endangerment and reckless driving charges in the incident. The three girls injured in the accident were all students at nearby Centennial High School in Gresham, Oregon.

The phone records subpoenaed by law enforcement prove that Dove was talking on the phone and texting while driving just before the crash. Moreover, a video on her phone shows her infant son in the front passenger seat, and investigators say that the teenagers were struck by the car just 1.42 seconds after the video stopped.

Dove “appears to have had no hands on the steering wheel” when she entered the cross walk, according to court documents. She was not, however, under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Dove has decided to plead not guilty. In an interview with a local TV station, prosecutors said that they plan to argue the young mom’s distracted driving created a substantial risk of injury.

Under Oregon state law, using a phone while driving is banned unless the driver is 18 or older and is employing a hands-free device.
